If you don’t use it, you’ll lose it… eventually. Cannabis has gone bad, but it can be a little tricky to know whether your buds are OK to smoke. Properly stored and cured cannabis should last between 6 months and 1 year but there are a few telltale signs you can rely on to find out whether your weed can be safely consumed – read on to find out!
Visually – How to Tell If Your Cannabis Has Gone Bad?
Fresh cannabis looks vibrant, green, a little purple, maybe with some orange hairs and some trichomes. If the bud is starting to turn colors, away from green towards brown or yellow and the hairs have fallen off, you’re probably dealing with some old weed.
Texture – How to Tell If Your Cannabis Has Gone Bad?
Your cannabis should be slightly bouncy, you should be able to squeeze it a little and it should resist you a little bit. It should also be slightly moist from the curing process. If your weed crumbles, is brittle, is dry, doesn’t give any resistance when you press on it, and just falls apart, it’s probably going bad or has gone bad.
Smell and Taste – How to Tell If Your Cannabis Has Gone Bad?
This will tell you a lot, especially if you’re concerned with mold since your weed could still be bad and moist at the same time. Yet, even when it is moist it should have telltale signs of having gone bad. The first way you can tell is if it no longer has smells – this means that the terpenes have degraded to the point of no longer being potent. If it smells sour, like wet laundry, or just not like it should then it likely has gone bad.
Check for Mold – How to Tell If Your Cannabis Has Gone Bad?
OK, so mold is bad but not the worst thing in the world if you smoke it just once or twice. In all likelihood, you probably have already smoked some moldy weed at some point. Regardless, we should avoid this as best we can and we can check our buds for mold and it is pretty easy to do. Mold will look fuzzy, with little white hairs or spiderweb-type growths across the surface of your bud; you may also see something that looks like trichomes but if you look closely you’ll see that it is actually powdery mildew. You can also smell your bud and if it smells sour it has probably gone bad.
That is a quick summary of how to find out whether your cannabis has gone bad. We hope it helps the next time you open up your jar and pull out a nug and take a moment to question, should I smoke this? If it has gone bad and you do smoke it, you’ll probably be alright, but fresh weed will always make you feel better.
