One of the main questions we face in growing cannabis is the question of nutrients. What nutrients do I need and what does each one do?
In this short article, we will describe what macro and micronutrients are and why they are important to our plants’ health. This way you will have a better understanding of what your plants need.
Macronutrients are the main components in growing cannabis. Plants require macronutrients in higher doses than micronutrients. The main macronutrients that cannabis needs most are nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. These are normally labeled as N, P, and K, and most nutrient packages will have the value of each labeled on the packages.
Other macronutrients that cannabis needs are calcium (CA), magnesium (MG), and sulfur (S). While the plants need these nutrients, they are used in lower doses than the main macronutrients.
Every macronutrient benefits the plants in their own way. Nitrogen (N) is one of the most important nutrients: nitrogen helps the plant produce sugars and allows for more light absorption, providing better growth. Phosphorus (P) is essential for development by helping the plant store energy in cells and this helps the reproduction of cells in the plant. Potassium (K) allows the plant to “breathe” during photosynthesis. Potassium is responsible for regulating the oxygen that expels from the plant and the CO2 that the plant brings in.
Micronutrients, while used in smaller doses, are still important to have a healthy plant. Calcium (CA) is crucial in helping develop cell walls and the membranes of the cells. Magnesium (MG) is responsible for helping the plant absorb light energy by powering the chlorophyll molecules. Sulfur (S) helps the plant build proteins and amino acids. Plants would struggle without micronutrients added in, so even though they are used less than macronutrients they are still a crucial element in the nutrient world.
